Business Philosophy
We believe there is a better way. We don't profess to know what that is, but we are willing to get up early each day to be shown through grace and grit what takes us closer. Twenty plus years of experience in large and small scale nursery operations has shown us that every moment of every day is a miraculous learning and growth opportunity. We will not settle for good enough and hope that you won't either.
Plant Quality
Green Village Plants is committed to growing and selling the best plants available. In our 20+ years of commercial growing, we've engaged in the ongoing process of learning what will grow consistently well in our region and what won't. Your growing success is our success, thus we only carry ornamental trees and shrubs that consistently demonstrate their growability and longevity. All of our trees and shrubs are grown onsite. We intend for our plants to satisfy even the most selective customer.
We are a small-scale nursery and believe that the nursery size allows us to grow the best quality plants. We give our plants one-on-one attention via daily visual inspections, watering, pruning, trimming, staking, repotting and TLC in general. If a plant is not thriving for some reason or does not meet our standards in any way, we will compost it rather than sell it.
Container Growing
In our experience of commercial growing and sales of container grown, balled and burlapped, and bare root trees and shrubs, we have determined that container grown trees and shrubs offer the best value and viability. Quality counts not only in the tops, but in the root systems. We believe that vigorous trees and shrubs with lustrous, full foliage get that way with healthy, well-developed root systems. With container growing, we are able to manage the development of our plant's root systems via visual inspection and manual care. The potential problem of root bound plants is prevented in Green Village Plant inventory by repotting. GVP plants typically are repotted every 1-2 years, thus preventing congested root systems.
Some benefits of container growing include:
- Container-grown trees are grown in a lightweight growth medium and are easy to ship and handle by the nursery grower and the consumer.
- Container-grown trees and shrubs are available year round and can be planted almost anytime throughout the year that the soil is not frozen.
- A tree grown in a container will suffer little if any transplanting shock when removed from the container and planted properly. In the first growing season after planting, it is important to water the root ball frequently as the potting medium/root ball will typically dry out faster than the surrounding soil. The transplanted tree or shrub should be mulched. Adequate soil moisture encourages roots to extend into the surrounding soil.
How To Plant
We are happy to inform you as to how you can successfully transplant our plants so they grow and flourish. Please refer to the University of Tennessee Extension Service planting guidelines. The UT Extension website contains other potentially useful plant-related information as well.
If a problem with a plant occurs, Green Village Plants will gladly replace it if we are at fault. An example of where Green Village Plants would not be responsible is if a plant fails to thrive, yet the same plants at the nursery are without problems. In such a rare case as this, something happened after leaving the nursery.
USDA Plant Hardiness Zone
Green Village Plants is located in Zone 6b. To determine if a plant is likely to thrive in your zone, visit the USDA plant hardiness zone map.
Ecologically Responsible Growing
Green Village Plants strives to operate in harmony with the environment and all its inhabitants.
- In the effort to minimize use of chemical controls, Green Village Plants practices Integrated Pest Management (IPM). IPM uses a combination of good growing practices, wise selection of stock that is resistant to most pests and scouting closely to address problems as they occur.
- The nursery catches and recycles all excess water (irrigation and rain) through drainage systems and a holding pond. Resident birds, such as green herons, and visitors, such as Canadian geese and great white egrets, appreciate the pond.
- Our pot-in-pot growing pads use a micro-irrigation system which maximizes irrigation efficiency and minimizes waste.
- By growing in containers, we avoid the need to dig holes in the ground and remove topsoil.
Nursery Certification
In compliance with state law, Green Village Plants stock, premises and adjacent properties are inspected annually for disease and pests by the State of Tennessee Department of Agriculture. Green Village Plants has passed each inspection. A copy of the current Nursery Certificate (#437) is given to all customers who need to cross state lines with plants from Green Village Plants.
